Suspected Major Oil Spill Near Iran’s Kharg Island

A major oil spill is suspected near Kharg Island in the Persian Gulf, after satellite images reportedly showed a large slick spreading across the sea, according to international media reports.
Analysts estimate the spill may have spread across more than 51 square miles, with preliminary assessments suggesting that over 3,000 barrels of oil could have leaked into the water. Reports indicate the situation may be linked to limited storage capacity, increasing tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, and the impact of U.S. sanctions on Iran’s oil sector.
Experts have suggested that an aging pipeline near Kharg Island may be the source of the leak. The spilled oil is reportedly drifting toward Saudi Arabian maritime territory, raising environmental concerns in the region.
However, Iran has denied the reports of an oil spill, claiming that investigations have found no evidence supporting the allegations.
