UK Imposes Student Visa Restrictions on Four Countries

The United Kingdom has imposed restrictions on student visas for citizens of Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar, and Sudan.
In addition, work visas for Afghan nationals have been terminated. The Home Office announced on Tuesday that an “emergency brake” has been applied to first-time visa applications from citizens of these four countries.
According to ministry data, asylum applications from students of these countries increased by more than 470 percent between 2021 and 2025. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the UK would always offer refuge to those fleeing war and persecution but stressed that the visa system must not be abused. She described the move as an unprecedented decision to refuse visas to those attempting to misuse the country’s generosity.
Immigration has become a major issue in British politics. The government led by Prime Minister Keir Starmer has tightened asylum procedures and accelerated deportations to counter the growing influence of the right-wing Reform UK party.
According to the Press Association (PA), the new rules will be formally presented on Thursday. Under the revised regulations, asylum seekers will now have to undergo a review of their status every 30 months. The Home Office stated that additional measures were taken as student visa holders account for 13 percent of total asylum claims.
