India Launches Heaviest Ever Payload, Boosting Space Ambitions

New Delhi, — India’s space agency successfully launched its heaviest ever payload on Wednesday, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailing the achievement as “a significant stride” for the country’s space sector.

The LVM3-M6 rocket carried the US-built AST SpaceMobile communications satellite into low-Earth orbit. Weighing 6,100 kilograms (13,448 pounds), the satellite represents the heaviest payload ever launched from Indian soil, according to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

The launch marks a key milestone in India’s low-cost space programme, which includes plans for an uncrewed orbital mission and human spaceflight in the coming years. The rocket used for this mission is a modified version of the vehicle India plans to deploy for future heavy launches.

Prime Minister Modi said the mission strengthens India’s heavy-lift launch capability and reinforces the country’s expanding role in the global commercial satellite market. “It is a proud milestone in India’s space journey,” he stated.

Earlier this year, ISRO launched the CMS-03 communication satellite, which weighed around 4,410 kilograms. The upgraded LVM3 rocket now enables India to handle heavier payloads, including commercial satellites, as it competes for a larger share of the global space communications market.

India has rapidly expanded its space ambitions over the past decade, achieving notable milestones at significantly lower costs than other established spacefaring nations. ISRO has announced plans for an uncrewed orbital mission ahead of its first human spaceflight in 2027, with Prime Minister Modi also revealing intentions to send an astronaut to the Moon by 2040.
