Squatter Communities in Jhapa Living in Fear: UML Chair KP Sharma Oli

Jhapa — Chairperson of the CPN-UML, KP Sharma Oli, has said that squatter communities in Jhapa have started feeling fearful. Addressing the second full meeting of the National Youth Association’s Regional Coordination Committee–5 in Jhapa on Wednesday, Oli said local residents were worried due to rumors and uncertainty.

According to Oli, squatters fear they may be evicted using bulldozers.
“Squatter friends told me they are afraid, hearing rumors that settlements will be demolished and bulldozers will be brought in. They don’t know who has arrived and what will happen,” he said.

Oli criticized so-called new political forces, arguing that past experiments had failed to deliver development. He claimed that since 2008, such forces neither contributed to development nor maintained strong public engagement.

“Since 2008, not even a single brick of development has been laid. There is no connection with the people, nothing moves forward,” Oli said, describing the experience of ‘new politics’ as “bitter and unpleasant.”

He cautioned voters against casting ballots simply in the name of newness.
“Even banks don’t print currency without collateral. Should people cast votes without checking background and credibility?” he asked.

Targeting Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balen Shah, Oli claimed Shah had no meaningful contribution in Jhapa.
“What will he do here? I built the road in front of his house, I constructed the bridge,” Oli said. “There is no national vision, no visible work to show.”
