Hantavirus Cases Detected on Atlantic Cruise, WHO Raises Concern

The World Health Organization has confirmed that five passengers who fell ill during an Atlantic cruise that departed from Argentina on April 1 have tested positive for Hantavirus.
According to the WHO, three additional cases are suspected, raising concerns that more infections could emerge. The outbreak is linked to the Dutch-flagged cruise ship MV Hondius, which traveled from Ushuaia through the Atlantic Ocean to Cape Verde and is now heading toward Tenerife.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that eight total infections have been identified so far, with three deaths reported. Among the cases, five have been confirmed as hantavirus, while three remain under investigation.
He noted that the strain involved is the Andes virus, which is known to circulate in Latin America and is the only hantavirus strain capable of human-to-human transmission. Due to its incubation period of up to six weeks, the number of cases may still rise.
WHO officials say the outbreak is expected to remain contained if proper public health measures are followed. Emergency response director Abdi Rahman Mahamud emphasized that international cooperation and strict precautions are key to limiting the spread.
About Hantavirus
Hantavirus is typically transmitted through contact with infected rodents or their urine, droppings, and saliva. Unlike airborne viruses, it does not spread easily through the air, but it can be highly dangerous.
There is currently no specific cure or vaccine. Treatment focuses on managing symptoms, and severe cases may require ventilator support. The disease has an estimated fatality rate of around 38%, which can be higher in elderly or vulnerable individuals.
Experts warn that early detection is crucial, as severe cases can become life-threatening within 7–10 days.
