Minister Pariyar Highlights Mushroom Promotion on National Mushroom Day

Kathmandu, — Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Dr. Madan Prasad Pariyar, has emphasized that the production, promotion, and commercialization of mushrooms are a priority for the ministry.

In a message of best wishes on the occasion of National Mushroom Day, observed today for the first time this year, Minister Pariyar highlighted that the Centre for Industrial Entomology Development under the Department of Agriculture has been implementing programs to expand technology, promote production, and strengthen the mushroom market.

The government has declared Poush 15 as National Mushroom Day, aiming to reduce imports and encourage exports. Currently, mushroom contributes 0.15 percent to the country’s agricultural gross product, with around 35,000 farmers directly engaged in mushroom cultivation.

Studies indicate that out of 1,150 mushroom species in Nepal, 147 are edible, 70 have medicinal value, and 100 are poisonous.

Minister Pariyar noted that Nepal’s geographical and climatic diversity allows year-round mushroom production, which can create employment and boost the agricultural economy. He also urged stakeholders in research, infrastructure development, and market promotion to coordinate efforts for the further advancement of mushroom farming.
