Communications Minister Kharel Visits Gen-Z Injured at TUTH, Vows Support

Kathmandu-Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Jagadish Kharel, today visited the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) to meet those injured during the recent Gen-Z demonstrations and their families.

During the visit, Minister Kharel spoke with doctors overseeing the treatment of the injured and received updates on their health. He emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring comprehensive medical care, urging healthcare providers to leave no stone unturned in their efforts.

Wishing for the speedy recovery of the injured, the Minister reaffirmed the government’s dedication to addressing the causes that led to the protests. “Our current priority is the prompt recovery of the injured. Subsequently, we will take actions that honor the spirit of the demonstrations and respond to the voices of martyrs and the injured,” he said.

Several injured individuals conveyed their concerns to the Minister. Among them, 29-year-old Rabi Bhandari from Sindhuli, who was injured during the protests, urged authorities not to forget the sacrifices made by Gen-Z participants. “The country must move forward by honoring the sacrifices of those who attained martyrdom during the movement,” Bhandari said. He shared that, as the eldest son and sole breadwinner of his family, his current hospitalization has left both his future and his family’s financial condition in uncertainty.

Similarly, Kusudevi Thapa, mother of 18-year-old Sunil Thapa, also injured, expressed hope for government support. “Before the movement, my son was preparing to go to Japan. Now, he can’t even stand on his feet. The government must step in to ensure he receives proper treatment so his mobility can be restored,” she said.

Out of the 2,316 individuals injured during the protests and taken to hospitals nationwide, 2,212 have already returned home after receiving treatment. According to the Ministry of Health and Population, 56 people are still receiving care, including seven patients currently admitted at TUTH.

Minister Kharel’s visit comes as the government seeks to demonstrate its commitment to both the recovery of the injured and the broader demands that fueled the Gen-Z demonstrations.
