‘Lalibazar’ Film Release Stopped After Court Order, Sparks Industry Debate

The much-discussed Nepali film Lalibazar has faced a temporary halt in its release after the High Court Patan issued an interim order stopping its screening. The film is directed by Yam Thapa.

The case was filed seeking to stop the film’s screening, arguing that it depicts the “Nathiya” practice and aspects of the Badi community, which has led to controversy. While one group within the Badi community has said they have no objection to the film, another group strongly opposed it, leading to the legal challenge filed by Roshi Nepali.

Following the court’s decision, artists and filmmakers have expressed strong reactions on social media. Actress Keki Adhikari called the halt “regrettable,” saying it is unfortunate that a film cleared by censorship was stopped just before release and urged for an immediate resolution.

Director and actor Nischal Basnet reacted by emphasizing that while court orders must be respected, repeated legal interruptions in film releases could weaken filmmakers’ morale. He even suggested that films should be registered and censored directly through the court system if necessary.

Actor Deepak Raj Giri raised concerns about potential financial losses if films are delayed and later found suitable for release after legal proceedings.

Similarly, actress Regina Upreti said that such situations not only cause mental and financial stress to artists but also restrict freedom of expression in the creative sector.

The film had only recently cleared censorship and was scheduled for release on Friday, but the court’s order has now put its release in uncertainty.
