Protests Erupt Against Decision to Evict Squatter Settlements

Protests have taken place in Kathmandu against the government’s decision to remove squatter settlements.
Residents living in areas such as the Bagmati riverbank in Thapathali took to the streets on Friday, chanting slogans against the government.
The protest was also supported by Rastriya Gen Z Nagarik Abhiyan. Demonstrators carried placards with messages like “We need rights, not displacement in the name of development.”
Co-coordinator Ajay Sodari stated that removing settlements without properly identifying genuine squatters and ensuring proper management is unjust.
Meanwhile, as preparations are underway to begin eviction from Saturday, some residents have started relocating their belongings.
Following instructions from Prime Minister Balendra Shah to security agencies, efforts to remove squatter settlements in the valley have been intensified.
