Speaker Aryal Urges Positioning Nepal as a Premium Wellness Tourism Destination

peaker Dol Prasad Aryal has stressed that Nepal should be established not as a cheap destination but as a premium wellness tourism destination based on high value, deep experience, and sustainable development.
Speaking at a program held in Kathmandu on the occasion of International Wellness Day, he emphasized the need to move beyond the “budget destination” label and develop Nepal as a “premium wellness destination.” According to him, economic prosperity cannot be achieved merely by counting tourist numbers; rather, the depth of experience and quality of revenue generated from tourists is more important. He noted that wellness tourists tend to spend more and stay longer, seeking not just luxury but also inner peace and meaning in life.
He stated that Nepal’s Himalayas, sacred rivers, and ancient yoga traditions could serve as unique global offerings. Highlighting the rapid expansion of wellness tourism worldwide into a multi-billion-dollar industry, he said Nepal holds immense potential. Destinations such as Badimalika, Khaptad, Rara in Karnali, Lumbini, Manang, and Mustang are not just travel spots but journeys for spiritual experience.
Aryal emphasized the need to develop a new tourism model integrating nature, culture, and spirituality. He said this requires clear policies, a national wellness model, and strong participation from local communities.
He also mentioned that the United Nations General Assembly has officially recognized Baisakh 2 (April 15) as International Wellness Day upon Nepal’s proposal. He described this as a historic achievement and a powerful message for humanity to restore balance, reconnect with nature, and seek inner peace.
According to him, wellness is not merely the absence of disease but a holistic state of physical, mental, social, cultural, emotional, spiritual, and environmental balance. In today’s world—marked by conflict, climate change, rising mental stress, and rapid urbanization—prioritizing wellness globally offers hope for humanity.
He further highlighted that Nepal’s civilization, culture, and traditions themselves are strong examples of wellness practices. For thousands of years, Nepali society has embraced yoga, meditation, Ayurveda, natural healing, and coexistence with nature. From the inspiration of Mount Everest to the message of peace from Lumbini and the spiritual energy of Pashupatinath Temple, Nepal offers a unique blend of natural and spiritual richness.
He added that Nepal’s mountains are not just snow-covered peaks but symbols of meditation, peace, and self-realization. Clean air, pure water, green forests, organic food systems, and cultural diversity create a balanced environment for human life.
Aryal acknowledged existing challenges such as unplanned development, lack of clear strategy, quality issues, and insufficient focus on sustainability. However, he stressed the need to redefine tourism with sustainability at its core—focusing on quality experiences rather than just increasing tourist numbers.
He called for clear policies, development of a national wellness model, investment in human resources, environmentally balanced infrastructure, and active involvement of local communities. Tourism, he said, should be viewed not just as a business but as a matter of national identity and pride.
