Greenlanders Protest Against Trump’s Greenland Acquisition Plan

Residents of Greenland gathered in the capital Nuuk to protest against U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to acquire Greenland.
According to Euro News, nearly one-fourth of Greenland’s population participated in the protest. With a total population of around 56,000, officials said this was the largest demonstration in Greenland’s history.
Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen, along with members of parliament and government officials, also participated. Protesters carried national flags and placards reading “Greenland is not for sale”, and marched to the U.S. consulate office in Nuuk while chanting slogans.
MP Tilly Martineusen expressed hope that the Trump administration would back off from the acquisition plan. She said, “Initially, they portrayed themselves as our friends and partners, claiming they would improve Greenland better than Denmark. Now, they are issuing warnings to us.”
Support for Greenland’s autonomy was also evident in Denmark, where a protest took place in Copenhagen with significant participation from Greenlanders living in Denmark, estimated at around 17,000.
Interestingly, a recent survey by Reuters and Ipsos showed that only 17% of Americans supported Trump’s plan to acquire Greenland. Trump, however, criticized the survey’s findings as inaccurate.
Meanwhile, Trump has announced a 10% increase in tariffs on eight European countries, including Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the U.K., the Netherlands, and Finland, effective February 1. He also warned the tariffs could rise up to 25%. European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, have expressed opposition to this decision.
