Ajou University: A Promising Destination for Nepali Students Aspiring to Study in Korea

Ajou University (AU), one of South Korea’s well-established and internationally recognized institutions, has been drawing growing interest from Nepali students seeking quality higher education abroad. Ajou University offers a unique blend of quality education, global exposure, strong industry connections, and generous scholarships. With English-taught programs, supportive faculty, and promising career prospects, AU GSIS continues to emerge as a preferred destination for Nepali students aspiring to study in South Korea and transform their future through international education.

During his recent visit to Nepal, Professor  Byeong-Yun Chang, Dean of the Graduate School of International Studies from Ajou University, shared insights into why the university stands out, the programs it offers, admission requirements, visa challenges, and the enthusiasm of Nepali students.  Excerpts from the conversation are presented below.

Ajou University is regarded as one of the top-ranked and preferred universities in Korea. Could you tell Nepali students more about it?
Ajou University GSIS, particularly the International Business and Management department, is ranked between 400–500 in the QS World University Rankings. It is an internationally recognized institution and the second-largest Graduate School of International Studies in Korea.

All courses at AU GSIS are taught in English, which makes it an ideal choice for international students. The professors are highly qualified and internationally recognized, with most having earned their degrees from top-ranked universities in the United States and other leading countries. Their teaching evaluations and research performance are excellent.

Ajou University is also a great option for students planning to pursue a PhD after completing their master’s degree, as the faculty members have strong research credentials. In addition, the university is located near a modern, well-developed city where students can enjoy a high quality of life. Global companies like Samsung, SK Hynix, and Hyundai Kia are located nearby, allowing students to witness rapid technological development firsthand. For Nepali students, Ajou University is truly a strong and well-rounded choice.

There are many universities in Korea. Why should students choose Ajou University over others?Compared to many other universities, the cost of living around Ajou University is relatively low, while the quality of education—both teaching and research—is very high. The university is located close to Seoul and near global semiconductor giants such as Samsung and SK Hynix, which are central to today’s AI-driven technological transformation.

Since semiconductors are the backbone of artificial intelligence, studying near the world’s leading companies provides better exposure and job opportunities after graduation. Ajou University also ranks second in Korea in terms of the number of international students, and it has a very supportive environment for foreign learners. With strong faculty, English-taught programs, and excellent career prospects, Ajou stands out among Korean universities.

What major subjects and programs are available for international students at Ajou University?
At AU GSIS, we offer several specialized programs across four main departments. These include:

  • International Business, which offers:
    • MBA in International Business
    • MBA in AI & IT Business
    • MBA in K-Culture and Art Management

Students interested in artificial intelligence, information technology, K-culture, drama, movies, and arts can choose these programs.

  • International Development and Cooperation (IDC), designed for students who want to work in development, humanitarian fields, and social impact sectors.
  • International Trade, taught by economics professors, ideal for students interested in global trade and economics.
  • Civil Society, suitable for students interested in democracy, governance, policy-making, and politics, drawing from Korea’s advanced democratic experience.

Students can choose a program based on their academic background and career interests.

What are the admission requirements and scholarship opportunities?
The admission requirements are not very difficult. Applicants should have:

  • A minimum GPA of 2.7 out of 4
  • An IELTS score of at least 5.5

Ajou University also offers a very strong scholarship system. All admitted students receive a 50% tuition scholarship for the first semester. Based on academic performance, students can later receive 100%, 75%, or 50% scholarships. On average, almost all students receive at least a 50% scholarship, which significantly reduces financial burden.

Ajou University has long partnerships with Nepali agencies. How can Nepali students apply?
Nepali students can directly contact Ajou University GSIS by searching online, where all necessary information is available. They can also seek assistance from educational consultancies such as SD Miracle, which has experience guiding students through the application process. Students may apply directly or through trusted consultancies for additional support.

With visa appointments becoming difficult these days, what advice do you have regarding visa requirements?
Academic performance is the most important factor. Students should aim for a GPA of at least 2.7 and an IELTS score above 5.5. If a student’s GPA is slightly lower, they can consult educational agencies for alternative pathways, such as improving academic records through further study.

A valid bank statement is also required. All necessary details can be obtained from AU GSIS directly or through educational consultancies like SD Miracle, which can guide students step by step.

You are in Nepal to interact with students. How do you find their interest in studying in Korea, especially at Ajou University?
Nepali students are very enthusiastic. Many apply through GSIS directly, through consultancies, or even email me personally. We often discuss preparation strategies together. Since studying abroad involves many steps, it can be challenging to manage everything alone. In such cases, I strongly recommend seeking help from experienced consultancies to make the process smoother.

Do you have any final message for Nepali students?
Studying abroad is challenging, but it can truly change your life. Staying in your home country forever limits your exposure. Having the opportunity to study in Korea or any foreign country is a great privilege. I encourage students to take risks, explore the world, and learn beyond borders.

People may say destiny is fixed, but I believe you can change your destiny. Come to Korea, study what you love, discover what is valuable to you, and work toward your dreams. That is my message to Nepali students.
