Floods and Landslides Disrupt Roads, Electricity

Kavrepalanchok, Oct 7 – Continuous rainfall over the past weekend has caused severe floods and landslides in Kavrepalanchok district, disrupting road networks and electricity services in four rural municipalities: Khanikhola, Mahabharat, Roshi, and Bethanchok.
Several rural areas have also experienced communication outages due to power disruptions. Officials have warned that road transport may take several days to resume fully. Roads leading to Khanikhola, Mahabharat, Roshi, and Bethanchok have been blocked at multiple points by landslides. Efforts to clear the roads began on Monday, using heavy machinery in some areas.
The remote Mahabharat Rural Municipality remains completely cut off from roads, electricity, and communication links. Chairman Kanchhalal Jimba said there is no alternative route to reach the area, and reopening the main road to the municipality office and other wards may take up to a week.
In Khanikhola, all roads to the municipality are blocked, according to Chairperson Indra Bahadur Thing, who added that repair work has begun with machinery since Monday.
Roshi Rural Municipality has also been hit hard after temporary diversions on the BP Highway were washed away by flooding from the Roshi River. Chairperson Dinesh Lama said the rural municipality center will only be reconnected after repairing damaged roads at Chaukidanda and Ghumaune. Electricity service in Roshi is partially disrupted, and authorities are working to restore it fully.
In Bethanchok, local representatives have prioritized clearing the main road first. Chairperson Bhagwan Adhikari said machines are being used to reopen roads connecting the municipality office to other wards.
The floods and landslides have claimed two lives in the district and caused extensive damage to public infrastructure and private properties. Local authorities continue to assess the situation and coordinate relief and repair efforts.
