Only Nine Candidates Open Bank Accounts for Syangja Parliamentary Election

For the upcoming House of Representatives election scheduled for Falgun 21, only nine candidates in Syangja have opened dedicated bank accounts so far. Out of 24 candidates—both from political parties and independents—contesting in the district’s two constituencies, just nine have completed the process.

According to Chief of the District Election Office, Shreeram Thapa, 17 out of the 24 candidates had taken official recommendations to open bank accounts, but only nine have actually done so to date.

As per election regulations, candidates and political parties must operate a separate bank account to manage all campaign-related income and expenses within the legally prescribed spending limits. This measure is aimed at ensuring financial transparency during the election process.

Chief of the Treasury and Comptroller Office and Monitoring Officer for the Election Code of Conduct, Tham Narayan Aryal, said candidates are being urged to open their bank accounts promptly, and facilitation support is being provided. He added that all transactions exceeding NPR 25,000 must be conducted through bank cheques. Donations received and campaign expenditures must also be processed through the bank account, and compliance is being monitored confidentially.

So far, no complaints have been filed regarding campaign spending in either of Syangja’s two constituencies.

Under election laws, candidates contesting the House of Representatives election are allowed to spend a minimum of NPR 2.5 million and a maximum of NPR 3.3 million. Specifically, candidates in Syangja Constituency No. 1 can spend up to NPR 3.1 million, while those in Constituency No. 2 can spend up to NPR 2.9 million.

Candidates are required to submit detailed reports of their election expenses to the concerned election office within 35 days of the official announcement of results, in accordance with the House of Representatives Member Act. After the election process concludes, the Election Commission will close the dedicated bank accounts.
