Nepali Congress Representatives Travel to Kathmandu for Special General Convention

Kathmandu Nepali Congress representatives are traveling to Kathmandu to attend the special general convention called by ministers Gagan Thapa and Bishwprakash Sharma. The two-day convention is scheduled for Sunday and Monday.

Over 60 delegates from Siraha district have already reached Kathmandu. Siraha has a total of 103 delegates across four constituencies: 15 from Constituency 1 and 12 each from Constituencies 10, 25, and 4, according to district secretary Shailendra Yadav. More delegates are expected to arrive by tomorrow.

In the lead-up to the convention, senior district leaders who previously supported party president Sher Bahadur Deuba, including secretary Shailendra Yadav, co-secretary Ram Babu Yadav, and vice-president Sunil Kumar Mahato, have been collecting and submitting signatures. Meanwhile, Sanjeev Upadhyay, head of the Nepal Trade Union Congress aligned with Shekhar Koirala, is also participating in the convention.

Some prominent figures from the Shekhar Koirala faction, such as central committee member Dr. Subash Chandra Yadav and former deputy district vice-president Ramsundar Chaudhary, have joined in signing, resulting in fewer delegates from Koirala’s camp in Siraha compared to Deuba’s. Overall, the majority of delegates have already submitted signatures for the special convention.

Secretary Yadav emphasized, “The country’s political situation has changed, and citizens are seeking reform within the Congress. Compliance with the party constitution is essential. The current leadership is sending the wrong message if elections are delayed. The party should have held regular general conventions on time. Now, a special general convention is necessary, and the voices of grassroots members must be addressed.”
