Mahesh Basnet Alleges ‘Conspiracy’ Behind Attempt to Arrest Him, Criticizes Government

Mahesh Basnet, Secretary of Communist Party of Nepal (UML), has claimed that the attempt to arrest him is part of a conspiracy aimed at weakening the ongoing protests in support of party chairman K. P. Sharma Oli.

Sharing his views on social media, Basnet dismissed rumors that his phone was switched off and that he had gone into hiding, calling them misleading. He warned that such narratives are being spread deliberately to confuse public opinion.

According to Basnet, a false complaint had been filed against him three years ago using what he described as a “fake individual.” He stated that the allegation was proven fabricated during police investigation, and a related writ petition filed at the Patan High Court was also dismissed.

However, he alleged that the same issue has now been revived with a supplementary complaint, and that there are plans to file a “third fake complaint” using the same individual while the case remains sub judice.

Basnet strongly criticized the government led by Balen Shah and Home Minister Sudhan Gurung, calling it an example of an “authoritarian and dictatorial style” of governance.
