U.S. Abstains from UN Vote on Ukraine-Drafted Anti-Russia Resolution

The United Nations General Assembly voted on a Russia-related resolution drafted by Ukraine, with the United States choosing to abstain.
A total of 107 countries voted in favor of the proposal, while 12 countries—including Russia, Belarus, Iran, and North Korea—voted against it.
Meanwhile, 51 countries abstained from voting, including the United States, Armenia, Brazil, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Serbia, and Uzbekistan.
Russia’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Anna Evstigneeva, stated that if the Kyiv government were genuinely committed to achieving lasting peace, it should focus on diplomacy and mutually acceptable solutions. She accused Ukraine of seeking a politically motivated vote during the 11th Emergency Special Session of the General Assembly instead of pursuing permanent security guarantees for both Russia and Ukraine.
Evstigneeva also clarified that, unlike decisions of the United Nations Security Council, resolutions adopted by the General Assembly are not legally binding. She added that a year ago, the Security Council adopted Resolution 2774, reaffirming the need for a peaceful settlement of the conflict and expressing its position on the Ukrainian issue.
