Nepal’s T20 World Cup Journey

2014: A Historic Debut
Nepal qualified for its first T20 World Cup in 2014, following its performance at the 2013 ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier in the UAE. Among 16 teams in the qualifier, the top six earned World Cup spots. Nepal finished sixth, securing its debut in the tournament hosted by Bangladesh.

Led by Paras Khadka, Nepal was placed in Group A alongside Bangladesh, Hong Kong, and Afghanistan. In a stunning debut, Nepal defeated Hong Kong by 80 runs and then narrowly beat Afghanistan by 9 runs, capturing international attention. Despite an 8-wicket loss to Bangladesh, Nepal ended the group stage with two wins, narrowly missing the second phase due to net run rate.

Nepal’s 2014 performance is remembered as a breakthrough moment, marking the beginning of a new era in Nepalese cricket.

2024: A Decade Later – Joy and Heartbreak
After 2014, Nepal waited nearly ten years to qualify again. Under Rohit Kumar Paudel’s captaincy, Nepal secured a second World Cup berth through the ICC Asia Regional Qualifier 2023 held in Nepal. Out of 8 teams, only the top two advanced; Nepal finished second, thrilling fans by earning a spot in the T20 World Cup jointly hosted by USA and West Indies.

Placed in Group D with Bangladesh, South Africa, Netherlands, and Sri Lanka, Nepal struggled. The team lost three group matches and had one match abandoned due to rain. A particularly heart-wrenching defeat came against South Africa by just 1 run, marking one of the most emotional moments in Nepalese cricket history. After further losses to the Netherlands and Bangladesh, Nepal exited at the group stage once again.

While returning to the World Cup after a decade brought joy, the lack of expected performance was disappointing. Nepal experienced struggle, learning, and heartbreak in their second World Cup.

Looking Ahead: 2024 Third World Cup

With two past experiences, Nepal enters its third T20 World Cup with renewed determination. Facing two cricket giants in Group C, the team aims to convert experience into results, build on past lessons, and make history once again. Fans and cricket enthusiasts anticipate a spirited, competitive performance as Nepal strives to move beyond group stages and leave a lasting mark on the global stage.

This third appearance is not just a tournament; it is an opportunity to showcase Nepalese cricket’s growth, resilience, and potential on the world stage.
