Sudurpaschim Declares Public Holiday for Bhuwa Parba Festival

Kanchanpur The Sudurpaschim Province Government has declared a public holiday across the province today in celebration of Bhuwa Parba, an ancient and culturally significant festival observed particularly in the hilly districts of Bajura, Bajhang, and Achham.

The Cabinet of Sudurpaschim Province announced that all government offices and public institutions will remain closed for the day.

Rooted in the legends of the Mahabharata during the Dwapara Yuga, Bhuwa Parba commemorates the victory of the Pandavas over the Kauravas. Religious and cultural celebrations during the festival are considered an expression of joy and valor.

Dil Bahadur Budha, former ward chairperson of Shuklaphanta Municipality-11, said the traditional Bhuwa dance performed during the festival symbolizes bravery. With increasing migration from hilly districts to the Terai region, the festival’s popularity has grown in districts such as Kailali and Kanchanpur.

“In urban areas like Dhangadhi and Mahendranagar, special cultural programmes feature Bhuwa and Deuda dances accompanied by singing, showcasing the unique hill culture,” Budha added.

He further emphasized that the festival strengthens cultural unity between the hills and the Terai. “Bhuwa Parba is not only entertainment; it is a reenactment of historical and legendary battles. Celebrations begin a day before Poush Krishna Aunsi (the new moon day in Poush) and continue joyfully for three to five days,” he said.
