Congress Leaders Approach Election Commission Over Special General Convention Updates

Kathmandu — Following the election of the new vice-president from the Nepali Congress’s Special General Convention, Bishwprakash Sharma has approached the Election Commission to update records reflecting the leadership changes made during the convention.
During discussions at the commission, Sharma clarified that the Special General Convention was conducted in accordance with the party constitution. “When disciplinary actions were taken, we were not yet general secretaries. The central working committee had already been dissolved,” Sharma explained. He also recalled that 54.58 percent of party representatives had signed a petition in Ashoj requesting the Special General Convention.
Sharma noted that the regular general convention schedule was impractical, which led to disagreements among the general secretaries. “The party constitution states that both the central committee and the office of the central working committee exist. The central office operates under the general secretary. Failure to implement the constitution violates the law,” he added. He further mentioned that only 29 representatives returned their signatures for the Special General Convention.
Meanwhile, the newly elected president, Gagan Thapa, and his team have also approached the Election Commission to assert the official recognition of their leadership. Earlier, the faction led by party president Sher Bahadur Deuba had submitted a similar claim. On Friday morning, acting party president Purna Bahadur Khadka and colleagues filed their request for official recognition. Thapa’s faction had previously submitted a petition on Thursday to update the central working committee records.
